When I am out and about in public eating my low-carb / high fat foods, I still feel very uncomfortable. Here I am, a "fluffy" woman pigging out on a bacon double cheese burger on a bed of lettuce smothered with mayonnaise and pickles. I feel that everyone is judging me. Now I am sure that this is just my insecurities talking, but the feeling is real.
I want to shout to those judge-y people (even if they are only judging me in my head) "Hey!" "There is scientific studies behind my fat filled food choice!" "I can eat this, and still lose weight."
For those of you who may not understand the science behind the low-carb/high fat lifestyle here it is in my own 'simpleton' words.
Your body needs energy to function. Carbohydrates are the first 'fuel' source that your body will use to create that energy. If you don't use all of your carbohydrate fuel, it turns into fat (yuck)! Cut the carbs out and let fat and protein do it's job-- and put your body into Ketosis.
Ketosis is the state that your body enters into when it starts converting stored fat into ketones to use as fuel for your cells.
Bottom Line -- Fat fuels the burning of stored fat for energy. Thus the loss of stored fat (a.k.a- losing weight).

So how do you know you are in Ketosis? Well your body will tell you in a few different ways.
* Keto Breath - some report a distinct change in their breath (no, not stank breath), but either a metallic or even fruity smell.
* Ketostix - this is a more accurate way to confirm if your body is in Ketosis. You pee on a stick and the color changes based on the level of Ketones in your urine. (This may be the only time some women want to pee on a stick and have it be positive!) You can buy Ketostix at your local pharmacy-- or even better, you can find them on Amazon.com for $7.99 for 250 sticks.
I personally check my Ketone levels 2-3 times a day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once before I go to sleep. Some only check once a day-- and that is fine. I just want to react quickly if my body goes out of Ketosis so I can get back to burning fat quickly!
